SION is the pseudonym of the sicilian artist Anna Di Mauro that in 1999 finds out to have the gift of painting. On her canvas she creates heterogeneous subjects. She received unanimous approval from the audience and the art critics. During the last years of her expressive research, prevailed even more a strong attachment to her homeland and that’s why she decided to interpret and depict it in its many forms. According to Anna Di Mauro, Sicily is “sun, colours, passion, fire, history, beauty and love poetry. For this reason, she decides to create works and sign them with her alias “Sion”, works that can point out her love for her homeland, the biggest island of Italy and the Mediterranean.
Among the many known symbols of Sicily, there are, in addition to the Triscele, also “I Pupi” (the well known Sicilian Puppets). They become for her the most beloved subjects inside her pictorial production, dedicated to her island, rich in history and traditions, in which art and culture intertwine with marvellous natural beauties. Her love for puppets started when she found a narrow and long canvas, set aside for a couple of years: she took it, she observed it and had the idea of beginning to “painting the main characters of the sicilian puppet theatre”. The sicilian puppet portrayal on Sion’s canvas is always combined with everything that is related to Sicily: art, culture and folklore. Buying Sion’s original works will bring back memories of Sicily wherever he/she will go.
